How square footage is calculated
Square footage is the area of a rectangular space: length × width, both measured in feet. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 square feet. For non-rectangular rooms, split the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results together.
Why square footage matters
Flooring, paint, tile, and carpet are sold by area, so an accurate square footage prevents over- or under-buying. The calculator also shows square meters (1 ft² ≈ 0.0929 m²) for regions that use the metric system.
