How it works
How concrete volume is calculated
Concrete for a flat slab is volume = length × width × thickness. With length and width in feet and thickness in inches, the formula is (length × width × thickness ÷ 12) ÷ 27 to get cubic yards, since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. This tool also shows cubic meters.
Ordering the right amount
Concrete is sold by the cubic yard (or cubic meter). Always order a little extra — about 5–10% — to allow for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. For large pours, round up to the nearest quarter yard and confirm with your supplier.
Frequently asked questions
›How much concrete do I need for a slab?
Multiply length × width × thickness, converting to cubic yards. A 10×10 ft slab at 4 in is about 1.23 cubic yards.
›How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
›Should I order extra concrete?
Yes, add about 5–10% for spillage and uneven ground.
›What thickness should a slab be?
Patios and walkways are often 4 inches; driveways and load-bearing slabs are usually 5–6 inches.
›Can I enter metric measurements?
Enter feet and inches here. Convert metric values first, or use our length converter.
